If you are looking for an interesting day out I can thoroughly recommend visiting West Wood , close to Marlborough in Wiltshire. It’s an amazing wood, managed by the Forestry Commission, that hosts a glorious spread of bluebells in the Spring but also – the sarsen stones! So, what are sarsen stones? They are almost all quartz…. and they are the large stones of nearby Stonehenge and Avebury … and you can find them scattered about the wood! From there go to the ancient All Saints Church in Alton Priors where you can find a sarsen stone under a hatch door in the floor of the church!
End your trip at Honeystreet Mill in Pewsey. Here you will find a delightful cafe on the banks of the canal plus The Inda Shop selling a whole range of beautiful gifts, carving, textiles and much more…
I have written a ‘Did you know’ news sheet on this, in much more detail, for The Gentle Touch. Please contact me if you would like a copy…
